Hong Kong airport paralyzed by a sit-in of 5,000 demonstrators
More than 5,000 demonstrators are gathering at Hong Kong International Airport on Monday after a weekend of further clashes on the island. All flights for the day on departure and arrival have been cancelled.

Hong Kong Airport announced the cancellation of all departing and arriving flights on Monday, August 12, due to the scale of a demonstration in its main terminal. "With the exception of departing flights that have completed check-in and arriving flights that are already en route to Hong Kong, all other flights have been cancelled for the rest of the day," the airport authority announced in a statement.

This is a major decision for this internationally recognized airport for its efficiency, which in 2018 was the eighth busiest in the world, with 74 million passengers. The arrivals hall of its main terminal has been the scene of an impressive sit-in since Friday.

More than 5,000 demonstrators at the airport

More than 5,000 demonstrators, most of them dressed in black, gathered there to "welcome" and raise foreign visitors' awareness of their mobilization, with songs, slogans and a distribution of leaflets explaining the meaning of the pro-democracy demonstrations that have been raging in the city since June.

"Airport operations (...) have been severely disrupted by public rallies at the airport today," the statement said. The authority states that traffic to the airport is "very congested" and that its car parks are completely full.

"Members of the public are advised not to come to the airport."
